At Nottingham Metalworks we can make and install a variety of iron gates from large driveway gates to side entrance gates right down to front garden gates that may only be about three feet high.
Whilst older gates were traditionally mate from wrought iron throughout modern gates which are referred to as wrought iron are often made mainly from steel with decorative wrought iron components welded onto them.
At Nottingham Metalworks we can offer you both options for both garden gates and driveway gates.
As a very simply overview of the differences wrought iron is less likely to rust but is more expensive than steel both in terms of the raw material and since wrought iron to wrought iron welding is harder to weld this additional times adds to the cost too.
Whilst most people would think that it would therefore be more sensible to choose wrought iron over steel for the rusting aspect the reality is that once steel is properly primed and coated it will provide a gate that should last for many, many years and if the gates are knocked and paintwork is chipped away simply touching this up will mean that your steel gates will last almost as well as wrought iron. With the difference in pricing making steel a much more popular option overall.
As with most things these days there you will find wrought iron gates available online in various forms: from completely finished to bare iron requiring painting. The latter can be a sensible option for transporting large items that may well get a rough ride whilst being transported - especially if done by a third party who may not be quite as consciouncious as ourselves in the way your gates are handled, transported and delivered. However, that will leave you with the final task of painting your iron gates, which is simply not everyones cup of tea.
As well as the painting the actual fitting can be more problematic. Managing and maneouvering driveway gates is a two person job so this would need to be faactored in as well as having powerfull enough tools to fix hinges to your wall or post.
If your wall or post is not strong enough you then have problems. To fit supporting posts will alter the overall gap and you will then have gates bigger than the gap you oringally measured. The other very important factor when fitting gates is to ensure that any slope in the ground have been taken into account. If the opening direction of your gates are going up a slope then you may not be able to fully open your gates before the bottom is stopped by the ground. This can be accounted for by leavered hinges but if this wasn't included in your standard 'online order pack' then it's likely you will need expert assistance.
We focus on providing a full wrought iron gate supply and fit service. We measure up, we check the potential fixing positions of the hinges and the lay of the land. If it doesn't open and fit properly - it's on us to sort it out. We take full accountability for the quality of our fabrication and installation, so you don't have to!
The final topping on the vertical bars of a wrought iron gate can vary hugely. There are many options available and we can weld any of these toppers to the iron bars to give you the finish you're after.
There are many spear options, which are sometimes referred to as Fleur de Lis and it is very common for these to be painted in a different colour to give some additional interst and a subtle bespoke aspect to your gate.
The most popualr paint options for the toppers of wrought iron gates are silver and gold. Other shades or yellow, green and cream are often used if your have a rendered house with one of these coulours and you are aiming for a consistent look.
Iron driveway gates provide a very classy entrance to your property and for those people wanting to show off their property and garden they are an excellent way of providing kerb appeal for any visitor.
Depending on how you want to complete your property boundary we can provide a full service to ensure you have a consistent style with your wrought iron driveway gates blending in with metal railings or garden wall top railings allowing the rail top design to seemlessly surround your property.
Whilst most traditional wrought iron driveway gates are manually operated if you also want to include automation to your gates let us know early on in the process and we will need to make some minor alterations to the gates to provide a descrete connection between the gate and the automated opening and closing arm.
We manage our overheads well and have a small team passionate about wrought iron fabrication. We use the best methods and practices to provide the highest quality long-lasting wrought iron gates possible.
Whist in theory you can simply add (or more specifically weld) more and more sections to a gate to make it big enough for a castle. However, the reality of how large a wrought iron gate we can make will largely depend on whether its final weight and size make it hard to get to the site and erect. If we need to hire additional transport and lifting hoists then this is getting to more of a large industrial scale and isn't our focus area. We mainly manufacture our iron gates for residential customers, which normally means that a wrought iron driveway gate will be the largest as this will have the biggest opening. We will advise on suitable options at our site visit as the space and slope of the ground and the fixtures for the gate will all play a part in how big they should be made so that they can be opened and closed fully and safely. For example, a single sliding gate will be twice the size of a pair of hinged driveway gates, so could be up to 5 metres long and 2 metres high which will be on the large side.
For a single wrought iron garden gate, vertical bars with spear tops continue to be popular and the same is for hinged iron driveway gates although these will often be arched whereas most garden side gates will be straight topped.
As standard for wrought iron gates, we provide a Locinox - which is a key lock. We can add almost any lock, latch or bolt that allows the use of a padlock.
For driveway gates, the locking options will also depend on the opening method as electric gates will have an electric lock, sliding gates can be manual or electric and most double driveway gates will use a Locinox.
Absolutely - we can include letters or numbers within or welded onto the gate. If we can fabricate it, we can fix it into the gate so if you have any special requests we'll gladly look to include them.
The main differences between wrought iron and steel lie in their composition and properties. Wrought iron is an iron alloy with a very low carbon content, typically less than 0.08%. It is known for its malleability and can be easily shaped and bent without breaking. Wrought iron is also resistant to corrosion and has a distinctive grain pattern. On the other hand, steel is an iron alloy with a higher carbon content, typically between 0.2% and 2.1%. This higher carbon content gives steel greater strength, hardness, and durability than wrought iron. Steel is also more elastic and can be tempered to achieve specific properties. Overall, while both wrought iron and steel are iron alloys, the differences in their carbon content and resulting properties make them suitable for different applications.
Steel is generally considered to be stronger than wrought iron. This is because steel is an alloy made by combining iron with various other elements, such as carbon, manganese, and nickel, which enhances its strength and durability. Wrought iron, on the other hand, is a purer form of iron that contains a very low carbon content. While wrought iron is known for its decorative qualities and malleability, it is not as strong as steel. Steel's strength and versatility make it a preferred material for a wide range of applications, including construction, manufacturing, and engineering.
